My boyfriend raves about this item all the time!! Absolutely loves it, and uses it every time we go out to fish, which is super cute because he rarely compliments. The quality is great, adjustability is only as good as you are at adjusting placement on your belt. When he’s fishing and needs to change lures, it’s a god send — he’s able to hold his rod securely with it, and feel safe changing them while he does so. Love it!!!

Great product. I'm glad Pine 9 decided to produce this model. It's very handy if you enjoy walking along the beach while you are surf fishing.

I received this JettyHawk Fishing Rod Holster through the Amazon Vine Program for my trout fishing trips around upstate NY creeks and streams. It's a right hip carry design made in USA that slides onto a belt or clips securely—works great on wading belts and fishing packs. The build is sturdy plastic with good retention that grips fly rods and conventional spinning rods firmly without marring guides. Hands-free carrying makes it easy to wade, net fish, or dig for flies while keeping the rod secure and ready to grab. Fits my typical 6-8wt trout setups perfectly.Wearing it on the hip feels natural for right-hand casts and doesn't snag while moving through brush or water. Quick release is smooth but secure—no accidental drops. Compact enough not to interfere with waders or packs.
Perfect for wading anglers who want hands-free rod storage without setting the rod down in mud or on rocks. Works as advertised for stream fishing.

Fishing Rod Holster FAQ's

What’s the difference between Ambie, JettyHawk™, and the Hand Crafted models?
Ambie

A practical, durable hands-free solution for everyday freshwater anglers.

JettyHawk™

What is the Pine 9 Fishing Rod Holster used for?

This holster acts as a third hand when you need both of yours.

Perfect for:

  • Removing weeds
  • Changing bait or lures
  • Tying knots
  • Untangling line
  • Using pliers while holding a fish
  • Helping kids with their rig
  • Taking quick photos or video
  • Opening a drink
  • Sending a quick text
  • Preventing drops, sand intrusion, or rod damage

Whether you're wading, dock fishing, on a bass boat, bridge, shoreline, or paddleboard — your rod has a secure place instantly.

This is a temporary hold system. It is not designed to hold your rod while actively fishing with line in the water.

Are left-handed versions available?

Yes.

  • The Hand Crafted model is available in left or right configurations.
  • The Ambie model is fully reversible.
  • JettyHawk™ is right-hip only for proper balance and heavy-rod support.
Does it work with baitcasters or fly rods?
Baitcasters

They do not “lock” like spinning rods. However, if the rear grip is at least 5 inches long, the angled design keeps the rod secure — even when bending down.

Fly Rods

Requires approximately 3 inches of grip behind the reel. The reel seats into the notch for stability.

(See product videos for demonstrations.)

Do I need to wear a belt?
Ambie

A belt is recommended for best performance.

  • The Standard Belt Clip is designed for standard 1.5" belts.
  • The Universal Belt Clip works best with MOLLE belts and tactical loop systems.
JettyHawk™
  • Fits 1.5" to 2" belts using reinforced closed loops.
  • Optional metal clip upgrade allows beltless use (shorts, swim trunks, sweatpants).
Hand Crafted Model
  • Metal clip allows use with or without a belt.

All models work well with MOLLE belts when paired with the appropriate clip system.

Can this be used for saltwater surf fishing?

Yes — with clarification.

  • Ambie is designed for freshwater use only.
  • Hand Crafted models handle freshwater and light saltwater exposure.
  • JettyHawk™ is built for heavier rods and saltwater-resistant performance.

Important: None of the models are designed to hold your rod while the line is actively in the water.

This holster is designed to temporarily hold your rod while performing tasks like:

  • Unhooking fish
  • Clearing weeds
  • Changing bait
  • Untangling line
  • Using pliers

It is a third hand — not a rod holder for active casting.

Will it fit my fishing rod?
Ambie

Fits most straight-handle grip rods up to 1 3/8 inches (3.493 cm) in butt diameter.

JettyHawk™

Fits most straight-handle rods up to 1 5/8 inches (41.3 mm) in butt diameter.

Will NOT fit
  • Pistol grip handles
  • Oversized cork or knobbed butts beyond model limits

Always measure before purchasing.

Does crank handle side matter?

No. The notch design allows clearance for reel handles on either side.

Will the hardware rust?

All metal can corrode over time, especially in saltwater.

  • Nickel-plated clips offer better saltwater resistance but are not fully rust-proof.
  • Black oxide coatings are mostly cosmetic and provide limited corrosion protection.
  • Steel beneath coatings can rust if exposed.

Rinsing hardware with fresh water after saltwater use significantly extends lifespan.

Ambie polymer components contain no structural metal parts in the body itself.
Metal clips and hardware vary depending on the configuration selected.

Why is there a price difference between models?

Because they are built differently.

Ambie
  • Factory produced
  • Lightweight polymer
  • Reversible
  • Designed for freshwater and lighter setups
JettyHawk™
  • Reinforced marine-grade polymer
  • Built for heavier rods
  • Saltwater resistant materials
  • Reinforced belt system
Hand Crafted
  • Individually built
  • Kydex construction
  • Higher material cost
  • Greater labor intensity
  • Wider color and proprietary pattern options

Same core function. Different build philosophy. Different durability levels.

Pattern price differences reflect production complexity and trademarked proprietary materials.
