Frequently Asked Questions:
Does it work with bait casters or fly rods?

Yes! All of our Pine 9 Fishing Rod Holster models are compatible with baitcasters do not lock in place like the spinning rods do, but as long as the grip behind your rod is more than 5 inches long, the convenient angle of the holster will keep your rod in place even if you bend over and touch the ground. See this video

For fly rods, you only need about 3 inches of hand grip behind the reel as the fly rod reel will slide into the notch. See this video

Left hip versions available?

Yes! Both the Hand Crafted and Ambie models are available in left-hip configurations. Our Hand Crafted model is fixed into position to your order choice.

If you’re looking for a truly ambidextrous option, check out the Ambie model, which lets you experiment with either side to find your preferred placement.

The JettyHawk is currently available in right-hip placement only, optimized for surf and jetty fishing. See this video

Do I need to wear a belt to use this holster?

With the Ambie model, we recommend using a standard 1.5″ belt for optimal performance. Its durable plastic clips are slightly flexible by design, making it ideal for first-time users testing hip placement. Both the Ambie and Hand Crafted models also work exceptionally well with MOLLE belts and gear. It is important to note: Our metal belt clips are not compatible with Ambie.

The Hand Crafted model features a premium metal belt clip that is firm, low-profile, and reliable. It attaches securely to basketball shorts, swim trunks, sweatpants, jeans, or traditional belts — offering true belt-free versatility.

The JettyHawk™ can also be used without a belt when paired with optional metal belt clips, sold separately or bundled. This gives surf and freshwater anglers the flexibility to clip directly onto board shorts, waders, or other non-belted gear while maintaining a secure hold in rugged conditions.

Can you use this for salt water surf fishing?

Yes — but it depends on the model.

Our Hand Crafted model is designed primarily for freshwater and light saltwater use. It works well with lighter saltwater spinning reels, but it is not intended for heavy surf conditions unless you use a molle belt. Be sure to wash black oxide belt clips with fresh water to reduce corrosion as they are made of steel.

For anglers targeting the surf, jetties, and shoreline, the JettyHawk was specifically engineered as our first surf-ready fishing rod holster. Built with rugged, saltwater and freshwater-tested materials, it can handle surf rods, spinning reels, baitcasters, spincasters, centerpin, and mooching reels with confidence.

Ambie is not rated for heavier surf rods.

Important note: Our holsters — including the JettyHawk™ — are not designed to be used with the rod in the water. They are a third helping hand when you need to bait hooks, unhook fish, clear weeds, tie knots, or safely set your rod aside. See this video

Do you have an ambidextrous version?

Yes! Check out the fresh water version called “Ambie“!

Does it accept any fishing rod?

Our holsters are designed to fit most straight-handle grip fishing rods. Each model supports slightly different maximum grip diameters:

  • Ambie → best for smaller freshwater rods, fits grips just under 1.5″ (~37 mm)
  • Hand Crafted → fits up to 1.5″ (38.1 mm)
  • JettyHawk™ → built for larger setups, fits up to 1 5/8″ (1.625 inches / ~41.3 mm)

⚠️ Please note: some rods may not be compatible — such as pistol-grip handles or rods with knobs/cork butts larger than the listed diameters. Always measure your rod grip before purchasing.

Does it matter which side the crank handle sits?

Nope! Our Fishing Rod Holsters are designed with a notch that allows the reel arm to rest at an angle. This makes room for the reel handle on either side, so left-handed and right-handed anglers can use the holster without issue.

Will the hardware rust?

Our hardware is built for long-term performance in freshwater and saltwater conditions:

JettyHawk™ model → By itself without belt-free add on belt clips, JettyHawk™ is good to go! If you plan to run your JettyHawk™ belt-free with optional black oxide coated steel clips, this will show signs of corrosion.

Hand Crafted model → Comes standard only with black oxide–coated stainless steel hardware. This will show signs of corrosion.

Ambie model → has no hardware, so rust is not a concern, but is not designed for salt water.

Why is there such a price difference between the Ambie and the Hand Crafted Model, and the Premier Prints version?

The price difference comes down to materials, craftsmanship, and purpose. Each model is designed with a different type of angler in mind:

Ambie ($) → Our most affordable model. Factory-manufactured and lightweight, it’s designed for freshwater use only and requires a standard 1.5″ belt. “Ambie” stands for Ambidextrous — you can swap its parts to configure it for left- or right-hip placement. It’s the perfect starter holster for anglers who want to experience hands-free fishing at an entry-level price.

JettyHawk™ ($$) → Our flagship holster, engineered with the highest-quality materials and designed for maximum compatibility. It’s the first surf-ready fishing rod holster, built to handle larger surf rods and a wide range of reel types: spinning reels, baitcasters, spincasters, centerpin reels, and mooching reels. The JettyHawk™ accommodates grips up to 1 5/8″ (1.625 inches / ~41.3 mm) in diameter, making it the most versatile option in our lineup. With rust-proof brass eyelets and the option to go belt-free using zinc-coated metal clips, JettyHawk™ delivers unmatched performance in both freshwater and saltwater environments.

Hand CraftedSolid & Carbon Fiber Textures ($$$) → Our original, heavy-duty design. Each unit is handmade in Nashua, New Hampshire using premium Kydex and black oxide–coated stainless steel hardware. Because it requires more time, higher-cost materials, and skilled craftsmanship, it’s much more rugged and long-lasting than Ambie. The carbon fiber texture versions carry additional costs due to specialty materials.

Hand Crafted Premier Prints ($$$$) → Built on the same Hand Crafted base, but finished with specialty printed Kydex patterns. These unique prints add style and exclusivity while significantly increasing material and production costs. Some are proprietary or trademarked patterns, which come with additional licensing costs. This is why Premier Prints are priced above standard Hand Crafted models.
